Ampeg originally was formed in 1960 under the name "Michaels-Hull Electronic Labs", a partnership between Everett Hull and Stanley Michaels. The original goal of the company was to introduce a new microphone that Hull created and produce instrument amplifiers with minimum distortion. The pickup was intended to fit onto the end of an upright bass, and was called the "Amplified Peg" or "Ampeg." After gaining sole control of the company, Hull changed the company’s name to "Ampeg Bassamp Company"
These days, Ampeg is primarily known for it's bass amps. However, they also manufacture electric guitars. The company is headquartered in Woodinville, Washington.
