Because a lot of people who buy vintage guitars are collectors and investors, personal connection typically does not come into play. However, if you have a personal connection with a particular guitar, for whatever reason, you will be more willing to pay more money for it. It is sentimental to own that guitar so you will do what you need to own it. Along with personal connection, one of the leading factors that go into vintage guitar pricing is the historical impact of the guitar. For instance, if the guitar you are considering buying is one of the first to have a solid body, then it will be worth much more than the same guitar of a few years later.
Vintage guitar pricing also has to do with the age of the guitar in question. For example, if it is a prewar guitar, they typically are worth much more money because they were among the first electric guitars. Also, the more vintage you can get when it comes to guitars, the better. This means that the older you can find, the more money it most likely will be worth. You have to remember though, that the guitar had to be worth something in the first place. You cannot just have an old guitar that never played well and expect it to be a great vintage buy.
Another factor in determining vintage guitar pricing is whether anyone famous ever played the guitar. This goes a long way in raising the price of guitars. For example, if you have a guitar that never played well, but it was played by a famous guitarist, people will overlook the fact that the guitar does not sound good. It will go for so much money. In order to get the best deal possible, you need to do your research surrounding the vintage guitar in question.
